Buckskill's Junior Programs

Introductory Skating Classes

Helmet use is strongly recommended for all introductory classes.

Snow Plow Sam:

This program is designed to help kids get comfortable on the ice in a safe and fun environment so they are ready to learn their skating skills. The Snowplow Sam levels will help your child develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice, as well as introduce them to skating skills in a fun, hands on class suitable for skaters who will go on to basic skills classes for figure skating or hockey.

Parent and Child:

This class allows parents and their young children (ages 2-4) to experience the fun of ice skating together as they learn introductory skating movement, and can be a great precursor to Snowplow Sam classes for younger kids who are nervous to take a class in a group on their own. This class will begin off the ice and start with the most basic skills - properly tying our skates and standing up! We will feature games and exercises that teach important skating skills in a way that is engaging and fun for everyone.

Figure Skating Classes

Basic Skills Clinic: 1-8

The Basic Skills program introduces the fundamentals of how to be a successful ice skater. These eight levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves: forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers and turns. Upon completion of the Basic 1-8 levels, skaters will have the basic knowledge of the skills needed to specialize in training for figure skating.

Basic Skills Clinic: Figure (Free) Skating

The Free Skate Program is the next level after the Basic Skills 1-8 Program. Each Free Skate level is divided into four sections: moves in the field, spins, dance/footwork sequence and jumps. The Free Skate levels are designed to give skaters a strong foundation on which to build their skills. This is the point where the skater can choose whether to pursue a recreational or competitive approach to the sport of figure skating.

Ice Stars

This class is the next step in pursuing the sport of figure skating! It is the point where the skater can develop a strong foundation upon which to build their skills while utilizing the entire ice surface. Participants will build their performance skills and explore team skating. Ice Stars is open to those skaters who have earned their merit badges from Basic Skills 3 or at the discretion of the Skating Director. Ice Stars is designed to augment the Basic Skills 4-8 program and skaters will have an opportunity to earn merit badges for Basic Skills 4-8. The class comprises one half hour of level-based small group instruction and one half hour supervised practice on full ice with individualized feedback and assistance from instructors as skaters work on their skills.

Choreography Lab

Choreography Lab is designed for figure skaters who want to maximize their creative potential on the ice! It is suitable for skaters who have a basic command of figure skating and want to start building the skills to be a performer on the ice, creating routines and learning unique movement to music. By the end of the class, skaters will understand the principles of choreography for figure skating and how to allow their own creativity to shine when they skate. This class will have a featured routine in the end of season skating show!

Pre-Hockey Classes

Basic Skills Clinic: Pre-Hockey

The Basic Skills Hockey curriculum is designed to teach the fundamentals of hockey skating. In four badge levels, skaters will learn how to maneuver faster and be more agile on the ice. Proper skating techniques are the primary focus of all the levels, and all elements will be taught without a puck. Skaters will learn the necessary fundamentals to be future successful hockey players. Skaters will move onto the Bridge Hockey Program from this program.

Bridge Hockey

For the beginner hockey player who has completed levels Pre-Hockey 1-4. Stick-handling, passing and shooting with the puck are introduced in this class. Once the child is comfortable with these elements they will move on to the Junior Hockey Program.
